Feeling sorry for the young

Sometimes an oldster can feel sorry for the young. Playing music here on a Sunday from my very own 'olden days' collection. And I go way back, yes that far even! And I feel sorry for them.

Frank Sinatra
What I am thinking about is our music of then, compared to the young who are listening today to whatever that is. Sure I hear it, on the street, on TV and radio. A car pulls up beside me at a light and I get the thumping, so loud I wonder if that guy crashed his own car he would be aware of it? Other times I can't hear it because it is in those earbuds as she crosses the street obliviously avoiding that bus. Or I try for a ballad but the girl's voice is so shallow she doesn't have command of half an octave!

I am not saying there is nothing for their future, but I do say it is so thin as to become tiring at a late age. Where is the staying power? What will the young have when they do get old?

And one does tend to review one's life as Autumn turns toward Winter. And at those times you remember Spring with a sigh and perhaps a voice and a lingering melody.

The idea is that I have a virtual treasure trove of music I can enjoy which brings me memories which seem always right for whenever the time was. Sure my music had messages, but they were more about love and hope and boy loses girl and boy gets girl back than death and torture. And wasn't Love a Many Splendored Thing with Four Aces up your sleeve?

Snoop Dog
And I ask myself when those who are hearing the strident strains of complaint from Hip Hop and RAP and chants of the discontented get to a later age, will they want to hear again about those growling indignations? Will they still want artists of their day talking about killing cops? Or will the women who make it into their future want to gather the grandchildren to hear again about the twerking bitch riding her man's pleasure pole while flying high on white?
Or about weed and heroin and meth being the way to go from Snoop et al? Or Eminem and Drake complaining about how bad 2018 was while banking millions? Or Jay Z and Kanye dominating for now but irrelevant tomorrow because their fortunes went out of style? Will they want to replay this year of delirium in 2058?
I know the argument that bitching could change the world, but is this so-called music just perpetuating the bitch instead of instigating a change?

Duke Ellington

Rosemary Clooney
Meanwhile I put on a range of music from my golden days; I grew up with Big Bands, Glen Miller being In The Mood, The always classy Duke Ellington taking his A Train, Count Basie and Frank Sinatra got under my skin. And Woody Herman and the Benny Goodman Orchestra with the hypnotic Gene Krupa beat.
And Peggy Lee wasn't all there was and Rosemary Clooney had me dancing on a string and some Johnny Ray Cry and Moonglow and Fats Domino and that ain't no shame! And Sammy Davis Jr. belting them out of the park. And Jo Stafford dreaming us along the Nile, and what girl in my youth didn't want to put her head on Paul Anka's shoulder?

Buddy Guy
Even when Elvis roused so many because he gyrated and Rock 'n Roll was so evil and threatening, I listen to Presley now and think he is just cool and mellow like Brazil 66. And even Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis with his foot on the piano and Bill Hailey rocking around the clock just raise a smile at their innocent energy! Wasn't it fun to the beat of Louis Prima with Keely Smith and their chemistry together casting their spell of their Old Black Magic? And then Fleetwood Mac and Pink Floyd and the Doors and Mamas and Papas and the Beatles. And we are left with all those wonderful Lennon - McCartney lyrics! And Grateful Dead rhythms and even Bob Dylan's insightful writings will keep you thinking forever! And Neil Diamond's true love songs.
Al Hirt

And all that jazz! Scott Joplin and Ragtime to Al Hirt and Louis Armstrong's All Stars from dixieland to a Wonderful World, and Stan Getz, and Coleman Hawkins and Billie Holiday still echoing through time with Ella Fitzgerald. Lionel Hampton sending out great vibes. And BB King and Buddy Guy and Ray Charles in Georgia and Etta James and Koko Taylor Wang Dangin' and Doodlin'! What treasures to rehear!

Reba McEntire
And who can ignore Willie Nelson and Crazy? Or with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristopherson and the Highwaymen? The straight forward lyrics of country will last a lot longer than a grunt about unfair society. Even Hank Williams and Marty Robbins in West Texas and Gene Autry Back in the Saddle Again, or Blue Rodeo and Reba and Garth and Charlie Daniels who kicked the Devils ass!

The list seems endless, doesn't it?

The point is, of course, now when I look back, I can still just enjoy the musical artists from my childhood and beyond. The music stays with you long after the black cloud or bad year has blown by. To enrich and mellow with the patina of something which ages gracefully and is as valued as Grandma's memory. And I am just as entertained with it today as I was when I first heard those harmonies in my very own olden days.
Bill Hailey

I do feel sorry for those who can't, great music is golden days, and one can take refuge there, in an endless summer of love.

Youth is so wasted on the young.

Pillow Talk

The excited Wife arrives breathlessly home from a job interview, her Hubby is reading his newspaper in his favorite chair, smoking his favorite pipe.

Wife - "Honey, I just got a job in the movies!"

Husband - "That's great, what will you be doing?"

"They said it would be as a Fluffer."

"Oh, what would that be?" He continues scanning his paper.

"Not sure but I think it is to make the pillows nice and soft for the actors."

"Oh, that shouldn't be too hard. And you needed something to do."

"Sweetheart, they said it would be like giving the actors a hand. And I would be helping them to perform better."

"Wow, even sounds important."

"Yes, and the last girl who did it, they call her BJ, said it was easy to keep it up too. It's all in the way you hold your mouth .... I've heard you say that when you had to undo a rusty bolt on the car."

"You'll do fine, Hon. I'm sure you can handle it. I hope it isn't too hard for you."

"I'm so excited to have a hand in making a movie. It could be a big job, but I'll just take it slow and easy at first."

"Do you know who the stars are?"

"Not sure, but I saw a man with a black mustache, I think he might be Clark Gable."

"Really?"

"They pronounced it Clark Cable, though."

"Great."

"I'm so excited."

"Yes, and I am glad you're getting to try your hand at something interesting."

Hubby goes back to reading his paper in a puff of smoke. She fluffs the pillow behind him with a loving smile and pats his thigh gently as she leaves for her kitchen duties.

Life is never the same after you’ve been part of a movie.

Population

I once knew a lunatic who tried to do arithmetic on population thick as you can see,
and also I must mention that this crazy man's intention only brought him apprehension from his spree.
So then he decided that he shouldn't have confided in another man divided such as me,
and took up his ability to have such versatility changed into the stability of three.

Upon examination we found out his computation was a strange enough creation in his mind,
for now we counted four of us and one too many more of us could only put the chore of us behind.
So we thought about it overnight until we found the oversight and waited for the morning light to shine,
but now we counted seventeen and someone had to intervene for fear the other eighteen would combine!

Things were getting out of hand and no-one seemed to understand that this was not a great and grand hotel,
we had to find a volunteer who'd promise that he'd disappear a person who would be sincere as well,
but all throughout the Brotherhood everyone misunderstood and Motherhood again began to swell,
and then among civilians they were counting in the millions which had finished in the billions very well.

We soon began to estimate we should begin to concentrate on keeping this accumulate in hand,
but everyone was now aboard and no-one here could still afford to check about this horde upon the land.
So we gave up our addition which had been our sole ambition and decided a magician we would need,
there was just too much dejection in this very huge collection over how we'd make connection to their feed.

You remember of the lunatic who worked on his arithmetic about this population thick as gloom,
well he's standing on the back on one who''s standing on his other son who's standing time has just begun to bloom.
Now there may seem no end to this and it may look like we're amiss but it is time to hug and kiss and sigh ...
and while I'm holding you so near I'll make sure within a year someone new will soon appear, goodbye.

Oops, the NEB forgot something.

The Supreme Court shut down the construction of the Trans-mountain pipeline from Alberta to BC. Rebuking the NEB's (National Energy Board) decision. For now. There are some things to consider if anyone needed further info on the dangers if it was to go ahead.

Remember the Exxon Valdez spill in Prince William Sound in 1989? What's going on up there in remote Alaska now?

In 2001, researchers at the Auke Bay Laboratories dug over 9,000 pits, at 91 sites, over a 95-day field season. Over half the sites were contaminated with Exxon Valdez oil. Oil was found at different levels of intensity from light sheening, to oil droplets, to heavy oil where the pit would literally fill with oil.

Killer whales are individually identifiable and fortunately in Prince William Sound they were photographed starting in 1984, five years prior to the spill. Two groups of killer whales were photographed in slicks of oil in the weeks following the spill. These two groups lost approximately 40% of their numbers by 1990, and an additional five whales after 1990. Their numbers had diminished by 40%. In some pods, there appears to be no hope for recovery. And some unique populations will likely become extinct as the remaining members continue to age and die. With the daily stranding of the oil in the intertidal zone, some is pulled down into the sediments by the capillary action of the fine sediments beneath the coarse cobbles of the seashore. It is estimated that the recovery rate is only 4% and could take decades, perhaps even another century! Populations of many species of creatures feeding in the tidal area are not recovering. Subsurface oil is still leaking polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) which harms wildlife.

So if you are still interested, you should be aware that Enbridge had publicly stated that they would form another company to run any oil pipeline and transfer point in BC to the Pacific. Why would a company do that? Well, when asked about insurance coverage for a spill, they didn't answer what that would entail in the separate company, leading many to believe that any new company designated by Enbridge could simply declare bankruptcy and walk away from the cleanup costs once they exceeded their insurance coverage and leave the ongoing financial bill to the BC taxpayers! Cleverly saving Enbridge from financial disaster.
Kinder-Morgan was never willing to answer those same questions about insurance that might leave British Columbians on the hook for costs. Why? Because insurance coverage is hugely expensive! Why? Because insurance corporations are not dumb and need to assess the likelihood of a spill too.

Kinder Morgan is now officially out of their proposal for the twin pipeline pumping oil into the Vancouver harbor terminal. The taxpayers of Canada now own it. Some bitterly calling it Trudeau's Folly.
The new pipeline that our Prime Minister says ''will be built" (in spite of the Supreme Court decision) would increase tanker traffic by more than 1000 trips per year. That is 83 ships full of heavy tar sands oil navigating our pristine waters every MONTH! And not just ONE tanker a day as some pundits are telling us now. And we should all know that Alberta Tar Sands Oil is NOT crude oi at all, it is bitumen, which sinks to the bottom and continues to pollute because we cannot clean it up!

And in case you didn't know, Exxon only paid $900 million and is still in court trying to avoid a further 92 million in clean up costs 29 years later!

The world's largest publicly traded oil company reported profit at $6.9 billion for the second quarter of 2013. Of course this would not happen with a Canadian taxpayer owned pipeline but a spill would become a political issue, and you know that virtually all party politicians would work 24/7 to hide the truth of a marine disaster in BC waters. But they should beware, everything has changed and way too many people are watching these days.

The NEB did NOT consider environment when barging ahead like good little Liberals and approving the twin pipeline. It was a political decision and they left their responsibility at the terminal in Vancouver and ignored the potentiality of spills in Vancouver harbor or Georgia Straight. Not even considering lingering environmental damage, what affects our sea creatures, our salmon, and endangered Orcas. Do you care or are you like that guy calling a radio station saying the whales should just go somewhere else? We already know that fish farms have endangered our wild salmon population, and in that chain of events, we find that Orcas are already starving for lack of fish. Can fish or any other marine creature live in oily waters?

And any action in the event of a problem now scares the hell out of us. We all saw that a light oil spill in English Bay last year was still being ignored while TV stations filmed it on the news! There was simply NO preparedness for action and little ability to deal with it! And here is another kick in the head; The shipping company responsible for that spill has offered to pay only 14% of the cleanup costs!

The Exxon Valdez spill occurred in remote Alaska, creating ongoing death for sea and shore creatures. The BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico, created a huge dead zone where nothing can grow or live. A Trans-Mountain spill would happen in the closed in waters of Vancouver and Victoria. And must we consider the ULCC tankers might arrive with a capacity to load 550,000 tonnes of oil? (bitumen)  These ships are 415 meters long! (13,661 ft) almost TWICE as big as the Noordam Cruise ship which comes often to Vancouver, at 285 meters long and a ULCC is a third longer than the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier!

And don't expect the main stream media to ask the right questions as they seem to take sides now and follow agendas which don't include the interests of the people. Politicians and corporations control MSM but you already know that, don't you?

So are you, as a BC and Canadian taxpayer prepared to suffer the ongoing results?
Are you as a citizen of Earth prepared to account for how you allowed such a disaster?
Are you ready to answer your grandchildren's questions?

If your answer is NO, then get out there and start bitching to the Ottawa politicians in some far off land who pretend to represent you while catering only to their leaders and party policy.

It's not over till it's over.

Canucks' turmoil (again)

This is about who knew what and when on the Vancouver Canucks.
Seems to me that AM Radio 650, who call themselves the 'Home of the Canucks', were in the know about coming changes in management and players since way back in February when Jim Benning signed a new contract which eliminated Trevor Linden from any effective leadership of the team.

If you could see a clip from the NHL draft two years ago, and watch Linden's face as Jim Benning made his draft pick announcement then, you'd see a look of total surprise from Linden, as though he had expected an agreed pick but Benning chose someone else. That might have been the first clue that Benning was undermining Linden.

This year it seemed that radio 650 (often called Canucks' 'In House Media') was very negative with the Sedins, and Linden. Hosts and guests talking often about how bad the Sedins were and that they were taking valuable playing time away from the young guns wanting to come up for playing time. The Sedins needed to go to free up space. And all this when the Sedins provided the only excitement in 2018 to a floundering team!
And the show hosts dwelling on the idea that Linden was on the wrong track while building GM Benning as the smart force for future success.

This may not have registered then except to say some people were commenting on AM 650 as somehow out of sync and more against the Canucks than for them. In retrospect it now seems almost that some hosts and guests on that station were in the know about future changes, and might even have been instructed to convince fans these people needed to go and so soften the blow when they did. Assuming management knew in February when they signed Benning to a contract that meant he reported directly to Fransesco Aquilini and not Trevor Linden.

So if you at least entertain this idea, many things make sense - yet bring up lots of questions; Did the team anticipate letting the Sedins go and so never considered asking them to stay on for another year? Linden once said they could stay as long as they wanted and many fans would have welcomed another year. But the speculation flourished about how much it would take for them to play another year. Some pundits thought 3 million would be too high, but if that was so, how would Benning handle the contract of Loui Ericksson, who has languished here even at a salary of 6.3 million with a few years left on that contract! Embarrassing for the GM to ask two future Hall of Fame players who were already being underpaid because they loved the team and community to accept less.

Help!
So what plans were laid to minimize the chagrin of mismanagement? Get your in house radio station to bad mouth Linden and the Sedins? But the rationale of freeing up slots for the young prospects was smashed when Benning once again, signed cast-off free agents to 4 year contracts! Saying they could mentor the young players! Really? Better then two league all-star award winners, the Sedins? Give your head a shake if you believe that one. And how important could the Sedins have been in mentoring the 168 pound Swedish sensation Elias Pettersson in this league?

Could the Sedins have been told indirectly that if Linden went, they would not be offered that one more year? And is that why they left their announcement so late, until it was obvious that Linden and the Aquilinis were about to part? And that with Lindon out, and older fifth-liner free agents signed for four years, what kind of deal could Quinn Hughes and even Boesser expect? Hughes going into limbo for maybe three years in Utica? Not to mention a coach who sat out Boesser for his first NHL game, and had to play macho games with the Sedins by cutting their playing time to single minutes until he realized he had nothing else on his roster? Shouldn't he have known what Daniel and Henrich would give? That was amateur coach ego. Not an NHL coach. And one would think the Sedins were far too classy to cause trouble. They like thousands of fans, believed Trevor Linden to be operating in the mode of Steve Yserman, who slowly but surely brought the Tampa Bay team to a Stanley Cup final.

Many are saying Benning stabbed Linden in the back but he says he knew nothing. Give your head a second shake. The team management is in turmoil and no one is wondering why. We have gone all the way back to when Arthur Griffiths thought he could run the team better than hockey people. What happened sticks as ownership meddling. And first time GM Bennings' deceit will stick with him too. And players who face years of playing with a loser run by a management front office have to make up their minds about their own future. The rumor is that many player-agents are wondering what is best for their clients. Nikita Tryampkin's agent thought it better for his client to play hockey in the KHL instead of being made into an NHL goon just because of his size. And Eric Lindros' action of actually sitting out a season is still remembered.

And if we recall what clues we got from certain Vancouver media, we begin to suspect this was all planned and executed sneakily and with money trumping hockey expertise and knowledge.

Now I know why so many fans of hockey cheer for the other team at Rogers Arena.

The Canucks' integrity left with Trevor Linden.

Repost from 2013

Not about Enbridge now but Texas oil giant Kinder-Morgan is no different in their manipulation to get what they want whatever the consequences to British Columbians. We had a tiny spill in English Bay last year and it took cleanup crews 17 hours to even acknowledge oil was on the water. then used booms to try to contain it. Bear in mind that dilbit from tar sand sinks to the bottom and can pollute for decades. Please read this again -

An oil spill in BC

Officials within the British Columbia government have privately warned that the province lacks the ability to manage oil spills from existing and future oil traffic, and even a moderate spill would overwhelm their ability to respond.

Ottawa’s decision to deal with BC coastal oil spills from a
base in Quebec would make it much harder to contain spills, and Transport Canada and the Coast Guard lack the needed environmental expertise to manage them, officials said in the documents obtained by The Canadian Press under freedom of information laws. B.C. Environment Ministry bureaucrats voiced a range of misgivings for Environment Minister Mary Polak.  Did they forget our Coast Guard was recently cut back from Ottawa?

Last year, Ottawa fired internationally respected Canadian oil-spill expert Kenneth Lee and eliminated his research centre in Dartmouth, N.S. This will limit resource managers’ access to critical scientific expertise when making response decisions in the future, oil spill expertise is eroding. And we expect oil company lobbying is increasing.

Even a moderately-sized spill would overwhelm the province’s ability to respond and could result in a significant liability for government. Weather conditions and the remoteness of the pipeline’s route in B.C. could cause cleanup delays, leading to broader water, land and wildlife contamination.
Sensitive habitats, local economies, fisheries and tourism, and First Nations along the route could be affected. The briefing book for Environment Minister Mary Polak, estimates that at a rate of 500,000 barrels of crude oil a day, a pipeline spill lasting an hour could lead to 21,000 barrels spilling into B.C.’s wilderness.

Imagine managing that spill from Quebec and start adding up the hours and damage to BC! In May, 2012, documents show officials in the B.C. Environmental Emergency Program in Victoria privately wrote that this relocation would hinder efforts to contain an oil spill on the West Coast. (One has to consider the relocation to Quebec which has no sea coast a political decision for votes)
And the warnings were written about existing oil traffic, without factoring in future expanded pipelines and many more tankers.

Remember the Exxon Valdez spill in Prince William Sound in 1989? What's going on up there in remote Alaska now?

In 2001, researchers at the Auke Bay Laboratories dug over 9,000 pits, at 91 sites, over a 95-day field season. Over half the sites were contaminated with Exxon Valdez oil. and if you care, read this - - - billtieleman.blogspot.ca

addenda - The Enbridge Energy Company has been recently ordered back by the US Government to the Kalamazoo River to do more cleanup. Because the tar sands oil/bitumen, has sunk to he riverbed, is contaminating and needs more cleanup.  01/01/2013

Enbridge or Kinder-Morgan, the only real benefit is for the pipeline corporations, there is very little advantage to the people of the areas or country-side they pass through, And no corporation ever satisfactorily answers questions about the insurance against spill and clean-up.

Once paradise is lost, you can never recover it.
